This work is part of an ongoing €7bn project to upgrade the 182km Karlsruhe - Offenburg - Basle main line, a core section of the Rotterdam - Genoa Rhine-Alpine freight corridor.

Assuming there are no objections, work will begin on the Swiss section in 2019 with completion scheduled for 2024.

The project, which includes the German station at Basle Bad, involves quadrupling the line double-track line between the border and the Rhine bridge, where the DB network joins the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) system, together with the construction of three new bridges. In addition, noise mitigation measures will be implemented with the installation of five noise barriers totalling 1400m on both sides of the line.
