ERA became responsible for issuing the single safety certificates as well as vehicle authorisations in multiple EU member states on June 16 under the Fourth Railway Package.

The first certificate was issued to Luxembourg Railways (CFL) for passenger operation on the Dudelange - Usines/Volmerange-les-Mines line in France to replace its national Part B safety certificate which was due to expire.

More applications

ERA is assessing five more applications for certificates and has received two pre-engagement requests. More applications are expected before June 2020, by which time all member states will be participating in the scheme.

“The key challenge for the agency is to make the new procedures work as seamlessly and effectively as possible, particularly throughout the transition period until June 16 2020,” says Mr Josef Doppelbauer, ERA’s executive director. “During this period there are different railway safety regimes in place. Looking at our experiences since June 16, I am confident we will manage.”
