The 52km line is an important freight link and serves JadeWeserPort at Wilhelmshaven, the only deep-water port in Germany with a direct rail connection.
In addition to electrification and resignalling, track and structures will be upgraded to increase the axleload from 22.5 to 23.5 tonnes and raise the maximum speed for passenger trains to 120km/h.
The project is due to be completed by the middle of 2022.
