The grade separation enables trains travelling to and from Manchester to cross the busy Stafford - Crewe section of the WCML, eliminating the previous flat junction.

The flyover is part of NR's £250m Stafford Area Improvement Programme, which also includes increasing line speeds on the slow lines between Stafford and Norton Bridge from 120 to 160km/h and resignalling of Stafford station, which has enabled bidirectional operation through all platforms.

The project involves the construction of 9.7km of new railway, 11 new structures, diversion of four rivers, 210 new overhead line structures, 16 new switches and crossings, and 70 new signal posts and gantries.
