The €120m enhancement programme will cut journey times by around eight minutes and will increase the maximum speed for Trentialia Freccia high-speed trains to 200km/h. There will also be improvements for regional passengers including upgrading stations and raising platform heights to 55cm to enable level boarding.

Electrification will also be renewed and 10 bridges will be modernised.

The works are due to be completed by 2018 and are part of a wider €350m project to upgrade the Adriatic Coast Line from Bologna to Bari, which will reduce the journey time between the two cities from 5h 22min to around 4h 40min.
