The modernisation of the stretch between Fushë Kosovë west of Pristina and Hani i Elezit on the North Macedonian border is the first phase of a €210m project to modernise the 148km line between Leshak on the Serbian border and the North Macedonian frontier, which is Kosovo’s only operational international rail link.

In February, Kosovo’s infrastructure manager Infrakos awarded Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie, Italy, a contract to implement the first phase of the project, which is due to be completed in 2021.

The project is being financed with the aid of a €39.9m sovereign loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
