The $US 950m line starts at Shahid Beheshti harbour on the Gulf of Oman, and will connect to Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported the line will later be extended to Sarakhs on the border with Turkmenistan, providing a rail connection to central Asia.

“When finished, the country’s only oceanic port will be linked to the south-north and east-west corridors. That’s why it is important,” says vice-president Mr Mohammad Baqer Nowbakht during a visit to the Khash - Zahedan section of the line.
