The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) has unanimously approved principles of agreement with the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority to extend the service south from Santa Clara County by 2017. The Joint Powers Authority oversees the 275km route, which serves eight counties and links Sacramento with the San Francisco Bay Area.

The $US 135.7m project would involve the construction of new stations at Watsonville, Pajaro, and Castroville. TAMC has secured $US 45m in local, state and federal backing, and is seeking a further $US 75m in federal small starts funding.

According to a TAMC staff report, services would start with two daily return services, eventually increasing to six return services as demand grows.
