CN and AMT began negotiations last spring on the sale, which is subject to final approval by the Quebec provincial government.

Taking over the will allow AMT to increase capacity by addressing conflicts with freight trains and increasing passenger services on the 30km 12-station line, which accounts for 45% of the agency's annual ridership.

At present CN leases the line to AMT, but retains the right to operate freight trains over part of the route between 08.30 and 15.30, and from 20.30 to 05.30.
