The FTA Full Funding Grant Agreement will cover almost half of the $US 186.9m cost of the extension, which is due to open in December 2017.

The extension is forecast to carry around 2000 passengers per day in its first year of operation and will serve four stations: Meadow Woods, Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee Amtrak, and Poinciana.

The budget for the project includes the acquisition of two new locomotives, four double-deck coaches, and a maintenance depot.

SunRail is seeking a further $US 35m in federal grant funding to support its northern extension from DeBary to DeLand.
