Due for completion in late-2023, phase 1 of South Coast Rail will extend commuter rail services on the Middleborough Line to Taunton, New Bedford and Fall River - the only major towns within an 80km radius of Boston that do not currently have access to the MBTA commuter rail network.

The $US 1.05bn project involves replacing or reconstructing 57.9km of track and 28 level crossings as well as building six new stations and two train stabling facilities.

Preliminary works, including the reconstruction or replacement of four bridges and 63 culverts, are already underway.

The second phase of the South Coast Rail involves rehabilitating an abandoned freight line to extend the commuter rail Stoughton Line south to Easton, Raynham and East Taunton, where it will connect with the Phase 1 route. The Fall River branch will also be extended to Battleship Cove.

Phase 2 includes the construction of five new stations and the reconstruction of the existing Stoughton station.
