METROLINX has awarded Alstom a $C 171m ($US 134.19m) contract to overhaul 94 double-deck type VII commuter coaches for GO Transit serving the Toronto area.

Alstom will undertake the work at its Thunder Bay facility in Ontario over a two-year period with the project due to commence in the near future.

The upgrade will include installing USB points, cosmetic upgrades to panelling and flooring,  replacement of all seats, upgraded toilets and installation of LED lighting.

The upgrade is designed to extend the life of the coaches, which will support GO's expansion programme aimed at providing faster and more convenient services for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.

The coaches were built in 2003-2008 by Bombardier Transportation (which was acquired by Alstom earlier this year).
