The order is based on two framework agreements which were signed in 2008 and 2013 respectively, and delivery of the trains is scheduled to begin in 2019.

DB will use the trains to expand cross border services between Germany and Switzerland, while improving comfort through ergonomic seats, adjustable headrests, larger luggage spaces, and improved mobile phone reception. The trains will be equipped with ETCS Level 2, and will have an extended maintenance data transmission system to support service inspections. Each of the five-car trains will be powered by a Traxx AC3 locomotive.

DB currently operates nearly 900 Traxx locomotives and more than 2500 Twindexx Vario coaches.
