The order comprises 12 intermediate coaches and two control cars, and will increase LNVG’s Vario fleet to 246 coaches. The new coaches are scheduled to enter service in autumn 2022.

The coaches will be equipped with CCTV, Wi-Fi and passenger information systems.

“This order will allow us to keep these highly demanded connections in the Hamburg area attractive and create more space for passengers, especially during rush hour,” says Mrs Carmen Schwabl, managing director of LNVG.

Bombardier will also be responsible for maintaining the new coaches, in addition to the existing Vario fleet and LNVG’s fleet of 37 Traxx locomotives, comprising 29 electric and eight diesel units. LNVG has outsourced fleet maintenance to Bombardier since the delivery of the first vehicles in 2003.

Under the current maintenance agreement, which was signed in August 2016, Bombardier will maintain LNVG’s fleets until 2035. Bombardier is currently undertaking a programme of modernisation on behalf of LNVG of 51 double-decker coaches, as well the complete Traxx fleet.
