STADLER Rail has awarded ABB contracts worth around $US 80m to supply traction equipment for new locomotives and EMUs ordered by Spanish national operator Renfe.

ABB will supply traction converters and battery systems for the fleet of 59 high-capacity suburban EMUs ordered by Renfe in July 2021. The 3kV dc trains will be equipped with ABB’s lithium-ion on-board energy storage system, which will enable catenary-free operation in the event of an electrification failure and movement around depots.

ABB will also provide traction equipment for locomotives ordered by Renfe from Stadler, although no further information on the locomotive aspect of the contract was available.
