The trains were ordered in May 2016 for the Stuttgart Network 1 Lot 1b (Rems-Fils Network) and 1c (Franken-Ems Network) regional concessions, which encompass services from Stuttgart to Aalen, Crailsheim, Ulm, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn and Würzburg.
Stadler Pankow is supplying 11 three-car and 15 five-car trains for Lot 2 and nine four-car and 10 six-car sets for Lot 3.
The low-floor trains will be compliant with the European Technical Specification for Interoperability for Safety in Railway Tunnels (SRT-TSI) and Fire Protection Category B as they will operate in new tunnels being constructed as part of the Stuttgart 21 project.
The Lot 3 sets will be equipped with LZB cab signalling system and prepared for the installation of ETCS Level 2.
Seating capacity in second-class will range from 165 in a three-car train to 329 in a six-car set, and all trains will have a 10-seat first-class section. Toilets will be compliant with the TSI for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and the trains will also feature passenger Wi-Fi and multifunctional areas for bicycles and pushchairs.
The first trains will enter service in July 2019.
