The consortium will install ERTMS Level 2 signalling on two sections of the line totalling 164km which will eventually connect Madrid with Badajoz on the Portuguese border. The sections are from Plasencia to Cáceres and from there to Badajoz.

Bombardier, whose share of the contact is worth €77m, will be responsible for the ERTMS train control using its Interflo 450 system. Alstom, with a €62m share, will install Smartlock 300 electronic interlockings, while Indra will fit the Spanish Asfa automatic train protection system for €25m.

Once the signalling has been commissioned, the consortium will be responsible for maintaining it for 20 years.
