Atkins will be responsible for design, engineering, construction, testing and commissioning the project. The project involves the replacement of mechanical interlockings and much of the lineside equipment such as cables with programmable ElectroLogISX digital interlockings manufactured by Alstom. The project also includes upgrading six level crossings. The new system will be monitored and controlled remotely from Colchester Signalling Centre.

“Using a digital interlocking system deployed with our overall system architecture significantly reduces the amount of time which track engineers will be required to spend in safety-critical environments, maintaining and repairing signalling systems,” says Mr Adam Parsons, programme director, transportation, with Atkins.
