BULGARIA is continuing the rollout of ERTMS across its network, with work beginning on the Ruse - Kaspichan line.

The Lev 205.8m ($US 107.1m) project includes the installation of ETCS Level 2 and GSM-R.

Bulgaria’s National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) says implementation of the project will ensure the technical and operational compatibility of trackside equipment with the onboard equipment of rolling stock used by European operators, removing a barrier to cross-border services.

NRIC says the new system will increase service frequency and train punctuality, improving the competitiveness of rail compared with other modes such as road.

NRIC began installing modern signalling including ETCS Level 1 on the 293km Plovdiv - Burgas line in July 2021.
