SNCF’s LGV + Paris-Lyon project covers 634km of track, of which 550km is high-speed track, and around 80km of connections to the existing network. Around 240 trains per day currently use the line, carrying more than 44 million passengers per year.

The modernisation programme will allow between one and three additional trains to operate during peak hours while improving reliability, availability and traffic management.

Under the contract, which is worth €129.3m if all options are exercised, Hitachi Rail STS will design, install and integrate computer-based interlocking equipment with France’s specific Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, replacing 58 existing units which have been in operation since the 1980s. The contract includes a €16.6m option for additional activities including testing and commissioning.

Hitachi’s equipment is compatible with ERTMS, and is currently used on the Paris - Strasbourg, Paris - Bordeaux and Paris - Rennes high-speed lines.
