The SNG train, currently being delivered by CAF to NS, will be equipped with an onboard computer programmed with all relevant data and parameters of the train. While the intention is for the computer to operate the train, a train driver will sit in the cab to supervise the automatic operation and intervene if necessary. The first trials are planned without passengers on board.

NS wants to find out what impact ATO will have on regular operation of the network. The Dutch rail network is operating almost at full capacity and traffic is still increasing, so NS hopes that the automatic operation will help to increase capacity by permitting shorter headways between trains and higher frequencies.

Two Dutch operators have already conducted ATO trials. Dutch infrastructure manager Prorail and freight operator Rotterdam Rail Feeding conducted ATO tests at Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 2 on the Betuweroute freight-only line in December 2018, using a rebuilt type V100 diesel locomotive equipped with ETCS Level 2. Earlier this year, Arriva Nederland, in cooperation with Prorail, carried out ATO tests in the northeast of the country on the Groningen - Roodeschool line.
