The consortium is responsible for design and construction of systems, including control, maintenance and diagnostics centres, interlockings, telecommunications and passenger information systems, axle counters and CCTV. The modernisation will improve safety, increase line capacity, and enable trains to run at 160km/h reducing the current two-hour journey time by half.

Work on the project will commence in November, with the contract stipulating that work must be completed by July 2016.
