FRENCH National Railways (SNCF) and French Rail Network (RFF) are making considerable progress under the €410m four-year Vigirail project to improve the safety of points and modernise track maintenance according to a report presented to the SNCF board.
AN investigation is underway into the cause of a derailment which resulted in two BNSF trains, one of which was carrying crude oil, to collide and explode near Casselton, North Dakota, on December 30.
A Renfe class 730 train derailed on July 24 on the approach to Santiago de Compostela leaving around 80 dead and dozens injured. The train left the tracks entirely at 20.41 on a curve 4km south of Santiago station, where it was due to call.

PRESIDENT Cristina Fernández of Argentina has appointed Mr Alejandro Ramos as federal transport secretary to replace Mr Juan Pablo Schiavi who resigned following unpopular remarks about a fatal train accident on February 22 in which 50 people died and more than 700 were injured.
