THE installation of ERTMS on the Betuweroute dedicated freight line between the port of Rotterdam and the German border was finally completed on December 8, when the section between Zevenaar, Netherlands, and Emmerich, Germany, switched to ETCS from the legacy Dutch ATB train protection system.
In a discussion hosted by Railenium at InnoTrans, Pascal Sainson, CEO of Europorte, Christian Maquaire, Railenium's director of innovation research and development and a former industrial director of Eurotunnel, and Armand Toubol, vice-president of New Opera and a former director of Fret SNCF, debated what is holding railfreight back in France and what might be done to improve the situation. ROMANIA's infrastructure manager CFR SA has awarded a consortium of Alstom and Alcatel-Lucent a €140m contract to upgrade the 167km Sighişoara - Coşlariu - Simeria line, including the installation of ERTMS, new interlockings and a new operations control centre at Simeria.
