KOREA’s national train operator Korail was awarded a contract on August 1 to provide consultancy services for the design of Manila metro Line MRT-7 in cooperation with San Miguel Holdings subsidiary Universal LRT, which is implementing the project.
TESTING is underway on Korea's Suseo high-speed line, which links Gangnam in Seoul with the existing Gyeongbu high-speed line, although opening of the 61.1km line has been pushed back to the end of the year to allow structural reinforcement work at one of the stations.
KOREA's transport landscape is set to change forever in June 2016 with the entry of a new player into the high-speed passenger rail market. Supreme Railway (SR) will begin operating on the new Suseo high-speed line from Seoul Gangnam to Pyeongtaek, ending the incumbent, state-owned Korail's monopoly of passenger rail services outside of metropolitan areas.
Private concessionaire FCCA, which has been operating and maintaining the world's second-highest railway in Peru since 1999, has invested heavily in both the infrastructure and its fleet. As Keith Fender reports, from Peru, this is now paying off as freight traffic has more than doubled and the railway is making an operating profit.
