THE Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) has appointed three engineering consultancies to complete a master plan for a 95km high-speed line between Espoo and Salo, a key component of proposals to reduce journey times and increase capacity on the Helsinki - Turku corridor.
LÄNSIMETRO, the company founded by the cities of Helsinki and Espoo to build the Western metro, a 13.9km line with seven new stations that is currently under construction in the two cities, has awarded Pöyry a design contract for the 8km second phase from Matinkylä to Kivenlahti in southwestern Espoo.
A consortium of Pöyry's urban business unit and German engineering consultant PTB Magdeburg have secured a contract from DB Projects for construction management and supervision of the refurbishment and electrification of the Upper Rhine railway between Erzingen on the German – Swiss border and Beringen to the west of Schaffhausen.
Laying of the first rails at the northern end of the Gotthard base tunnel started in February this year, while installation of equipment on the southern 15.5km is already complete, paving the way for test running to start this month. Anitra Green reports from Erstfeld, Switzerland.
