BRAZIL’s Investment Partnership Programme (PPI) Council confirmed on July 6 the inclusion of two new railways in the government's concessions programme: the Rio - Vitoria line and the northern section of the North-South Railway (FNS).

THE Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro has started construction of Line 3 of the Porto Maravilha light rail network, which is being developed by Rio’s Port Urban Development Company (CDURP).

THE Brazilian city of Niterói, which is located across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, has started a feasibility study for the construction of an 11km light rail network.

RIO de Janeiro added a second line to the Porto Maravilha light rail network on February 6, when the city’s mayor Mr Marcelo Crivella inaugurated the initial section of Line 2 between Saara and Praça XV (Barcas).

Rio de Janeiro was set to open the next phase of the Porto Maravilha light rail network as IRJ went to press, and as Kevin Smith reports, it is already proving a successful legacy project of the 2016 Olympic Games.
