Artemis and JCB are providing technology and expertise for the Digital Displacement Hybrid Rail Transmission project, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and improve engine performance. RSSB says that the combination of hydrostatic transmission with hydraulic accumulators, which store energy during braking, will provide significant benefits.

RSSB adds that the technology could be applied to non-electrified routes and has the potential to reduce journey times. Emissions and fuel consumption can also be reduced by combining the hybrid unit with a smaller engine.
