THE system removes rail defects and reprofiles the rail in a single pass at a maximum of 1.2 track-km per hour. The process is free from sparks and dust, imparts less heat compared with traditional treatments, and leaves no residue on the track, reducing fire risks and the chance of debris causing signal or machine failures.

The Romill system can finish up to 5km of track with one cutting board set, while a second segment can be prepared to reduce set-up time. Robel says the semi-automated processes mean only one operator is required to set up and dismantle the milling system, grinding unit and measuring system, all safely within the train compounds.
