Axion says that more than 68 tonnes of plastic, which would otherwise be destined for landfill, will be used in the sleepers.

The sleepers will be laid at road crossings, where salt entrapment and freeze-thaw cycles during the cold Albertan winter can lead to rapid deterioration of traditional wood sleepers. Axion says Ecotrax sleepers are not porous and are therefore impervious to water and rot.
