When the work is completed in 15 months' time, it will be possible to raise line speeds on the relaid sections from the current restriction of between 25km/h and 30km/h to 70km/h. RVR also plans to repair nine collapsed culverts between Tororo and Jinja in Uganda.
RVR currently only carries about 10% of the 19 million tonnes of freight passing annually through the port of Mombasa. RVR wants to increase its share of port traffic to 4.5 million tonnes by 2015.
