The train is designed for preventative or cyclic milling as it will remove 0.2mm of metal from the rail head, compared with 0.6-0.7mm for conventional milling trains.

The idea is to refresh the crucial wheel-rail contact point and to remove defects before they become a serious problem. Speno sees milling as a complimentary process to grinding.

The MRR 600 milling train is currently undergoing certification in Switzerland. Speno wants to start testing the train in the autumn, by which time a material collection wagon will be ready. Demonstration runs are planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
