Because of the extensive tunnelling, 52% of the 44km line has been laid using slab track. The line will be equipped with ETCS Level 2, and around 40% of signalling has now been installed, together with 65% of the 133km of overhead catenary. Commissioning will begin in the middle of 2012 and the line will open next December.

The completion of the line will also coincide with the opening of the 12.8km Lainzer Tunnel between Meidling and Hadersdorf, which will connect the line from St Pölten with the new Vienna Main Station, which is currently under construction.

These projects will cut the Vienna - St Pölten journey time from 41 to 25 minutes.
