The €127m project is being funded with the aid of a €106m grant from the German federal government and is a key element of upgrading of the Munich – Mühldorf – Freilassing – Salzburg line.

The work includes upgrading of track for 160km/h operation, the renewal of 36 switches, replacement of 11 bridges, and installation of 7.5km of noise barriers. The project will be completed in two phases in 2016 and 2017.

The single track section is currently a major bottleneck in the region's railway network, carrying significant volumes of freight from the chemical works at Burghausen as well as frequent regional passenger services.
