Phase 2 encompasses the modernisation of 111km of the route, including 29km of double track, and the installation of ETCS along the entire line.
The EU has already funded the upgrading of the Mihaylovo - Kaloyanovets, Stara Zagora - Zimnica and Tserkovski - Burgas sections of the route through the 2007-2013 Operational Programme Transport.
The project will raise the maximum line speed to 130km/h for freight trains and 160km/h for passenger trains, reducing journey times by 40 minutes.
