The region will spend €43.8m to purchase four 160km/h five-car Rock double-deck EMUs from Hitachi Rail Italy, with an option to purchase a fifth train. Puglia region will own the fleet which will be used by national operator Trenitalia.

Four of the five-cars will be powered to provide acceleration of 1m/s2. Each 136m-long set will accommodate 656 passengers.

The order is in addition to the 43 Pop EMUs and three Jazz regional EMUs built by Alstom and due to enter service under the terms of the 15-year concession signed with Trenitalia in June 2018. This will reduce the average fleet age from 29 years in 2017 to four years by 2023.
