ALGIERS marked a milestone in the development of its urban rail network on June 15 with the opening of the western extension of the city's light rail line from Les Bananiers to Lycée and Les Fusillés, finally linking the light rail, metro, and suburban rail networks.
The 14-station, 9.1km extension more than doubles the length of the line, providing interchanges with the RER at Caroubiers, and Metro Line 1 at Les Fusillés. Services operate at seven-minute intervals between 05.00 and midnight.
A further 7km extension from the eastern terminus at Bordj El Kiffan to Dergana is due to open next year. Around 185,000 passengers per day are expected to use the line when the third phase is completed.
