The system was introduced in October 2010 for iPhone, android and BlackBerry mobile phones and now has more than 40,000 users.

The so-called HandyTicket allows passengers to use their mobile phones to purchase and then download single tickets, day travel passes, and group day travel passes for travel on the services provided by 153 operators in the Frankfurt region.

On arrival at the departure station or bus stop a passenger taps his or her phone on a contact point located there in order to enter the system and register the starting point of the journey. After selecting the destination using the RMV ticketing screen on the phone, the fare is charged to the passenger's bank account. Once the transaction is complete, a 2-D barcode ticket is transmitted to phone.
