EIB has already provided loans to support the development of metro systems in Bhopal, Bangalore and Lucknow which, together with the loan for Pune, total €2bn.
The first phase of the network comprises the 11.5km north-south Line 1 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area to Swargate, and the 14.7km east-west Line 2 from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Both lines are due to open in 2021, with capacity for 600,000 passengers a day. The metro will reduce pollution and greenhouse emissions and improve air quality across the city.
“Pune metro rail will improve the living conditions of three million people in Pune,” says EIB vice-president, Mr Andrew McDowell. “It will enable more accessible and affordable access to workplaces, healthcare, education and markets, while protecting the environment and improving the quality of air in the city.”
The first of 102 aluminium-bodied metro cars from Titagarh Firema for the network was delivered in December last year, with construction currently 37% complete.
