The funding will be used to upgrade four vehicles - a T18-19 locomotive, a Desiro multiple unit, and M6 and I11 drivers' cabs - for testing purposes, ahead of a larger-scale roll-out of the system in 2023.

The funding was granted through the EU’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) and will support SNCB’s programme of ETCS upgrades to its fleet of 120 class 18 and class 19 locomotives, 305 Desiro multiple units and 85 M6 and I11 driver’s cabs.

The upgrades will ensure the interoperability of the fleet, which is used to operate domestic and cross-border services to Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany and France.
