BULGARIAN State Railways (BDZ) signed a Lev 91.1m ($US 51m) contract with Siemens on December 18 for 10 Smartron X4-E-Lok-D electric locomotives. The contract includes maintenance, staff training and the cost of emergency repairs.

The first locomotive will be delivered in the next 18 months, and the remainder of the order in stages until December 2025.

Siemens describes the Smartron as a pre-configured locomotive that combines the advantages of a standard product with the proven technology of the Vectron platform. Each Smartron will weigh 83 tonnes and will have a maximum speed of 160km/h. They will be able to operate under 25kV ac electrification.

Siemens Mobility has also signed two more contracts worth with BDZ for the supply of spare parts and to provide technical support of the first 15 Smartron locomotives delivered in 2021. The Lev 84.7m contract is for the next nine years.

Technical support includes maintenance, scheduled overhaul, replacement of monobloc wheels and brake discs, carrying out emergency repairs and safety inspections.
