MITSUBISHI, Japan, has awarded a $US 150m subcontract to CAF to design and supply a fleet of seven eight-car EMUs for operation on the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) in the Philippines.

The trains will be used to operate an express service on the new 147.26km standard-gauge line, which will connect Clark International Airport with Manila and Calamba City in the province of Laguna south of the capital.

The contract will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).

Construction on the Pesos 873.62bn ($US 15.8bn) NSCR project started earlier this year. The Philippines Department of Transportation (DOTr) hopes to complete the project by 2028. Philippine National Railways (PNR) will operate the new service.
