CRRC has reportedly won a contract with Argentinean Trains for the supply of 50 DMUs, an order the Chinese supplier describes as Argentina’s largest ever for DMUs.

CRRC confirmed in a post on Weibo that the order will comprise 25 1676mm-gauge, 15 1000mm-gauge and 10 1435mm-gauge trains. The order will be fulfilled by CRRC International and CRRC Tangshan.

No delivery schedule or contract value were disclosed.

CRRC Tangshan is already supplying a fleet of 60km/h two-car battery trains for use on the 1000mm-gauge Volcán - Tilcara section of the Belgrano Railway. The line runs through the Quebrada de Humahuaca valley, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The supplier unveiled the first train earlier this year.

CRRC previously supplied 27 three-car DMUs for commuter services on the metre-gauge Belgrano Sur network in Buenos Aires in 2015 along with 709 EMU cars for the Roca, Samiento and Mitre suburban lines under a contract signed in 2013. However, the EMU fleets suffered from reliability problems due to a lack of spare parts. Argentinean Trains subsequently agreed a maintenance contract with CRRC for these fleets in 2020.
