MJ launched a competition for a contract to supply a new fleet of diesel or bi-mode (diesel and electric) multiple in December 2018, but the company says one of the bidders was unable to meet the conditions of the tender.

MJ is now planning to restart the procurement, but the company’s board wanted to establish whether battery trains would be a viable alternative to diesel before launching a new tender. The analysis concluded that there would be a case for purchasing battery trains provided grant funding is made available.

Managers from MJ met Denmark’s transport minister Mr Benny Engelbrecht on September 4 to discuss their proposals. MJ is seeking the participation of the Ministry of Transport in the project, arguing that it supports the goals of the government’s Green Mobility Plan.

Engelbrecht says the ministry will now take “a closer look” at the proposals.

MJ says the battery trains could be introduced by 2023 if it is successful in gaining financial support for the project.
