The framework agreement to supply the locomotives will run from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2026, and DB intends to make an initial order of up to 100 locomotives. Delivery of the first locomotive is expected within two to four years after the first call.

DB Long Distance issued the call for EMUs on September 23, after announcing on September 20 its intention to order 30 high-speed trains.

The call is a framework agreement for up to 90 EMUs with a minimum top speed of 300km/h, along with spare parts. The vehicles will have a maximum length of 200m, and must be able to operate in multiple with DB’s existing class 407 ICE fleet.

The tender is worth an estimated €2bn.

DB says the order is in response to steadily increasing passenger numbers, and it is looking to increase its capacity and fleet availability.

The fleet must be certified to operate in Germany, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, France and other networks in Europe at up to 320km/h.

The vehicles are expected to enter service from December 2022.

The deadline for expressions of interest for the EMU order, and tenders or a request to participate for the locomotive framework agreement, ends at midday on October 18.
