EUROPEAN Loc Pool (ELP) has ordered 10 EuroDual bi-mode locomotives from Stadler for delivery in 2025-26. The leasing company is currently awaiting a previously-ordered batch of 20 of the same type, which have a 9MW output in electric mode and 2.8MW output when using diesel power.

The latest order, placed on December 29 2023, will bring the total number of EuroDuals owned by ELP to 84 locomotives. The locomotives, which will be fitted with ETCS Baseline 3 onboard equipment, will also be equipped with a country package for Germany and Austria and have been ordered speculatively. A total of 64 EuroDual locomotives are currently operating in Europe, mainly in Germany and Austria, with six running in Scandinavia. Stadler recently obtained authorisation for EuroDuals to operate in Serbia, with permission for Slovenia and Croatia expected later this year.

In addition to the EuroDuals ordered in December, ELP is expected to place an order with Stadler for an additional 10 Euro 9000 hybrid locomotives later this month. The locomotives will be authorised for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. ELP already has 30 Euro 9000s on order, all of which have been leased to freight operators. Seven Euro 9000s are already in operation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the remaining 23 units are due for delivery from Stadler later this year.

Stadler recently obtained approval for the Co-Co locomotive type, which is equipped with ETCS Level 2, from the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) for operation in the Netherlands and Belgium. The Euro 9000 is already certified for operation in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, with approval for Italy expected later this year.
