The project was launched in 2017 in response to industry demand for motors capable of operating in high temperatures.

Hyundai Rotem says the class 220 ensures high reliability in tropical climates and during summer heat waves. The system is also 5% lighter than conventional products, reducing maintenance costs and energy consumption.

“The traction motor is the best way to ensure that electric trains can be operated normally even during summer heatwaves in Korea while reducing energy consumption,” Hyundai Rotem said in a statement.

Along with the domestic market, the company is targeting the class 220 at warmer regions such as Southeast Asia, India and North Africa.
