Located at the western extremity of the Port of Rotterdam, LWR is a 50:50 joint venture between Amsterdam-based Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE) and the locomotive leasing company’s main supplier, Siemens.
The depot has eight stabling sidings and six maintenance tracks; one with lifting jacks, one with a wheel lathe, one with a washing plant and two with maintenance pits. The facility is designed to enable easy access from beneath, alongside and above the locomotive.
Locomotives are moved between the maintenance tracks using a traverser supplied by Bemo Rail, Netherlands and a remote control Zwiehoff road/rail shunting tractor.
The depot is equipped to operate with remote diagnostics systems on locomotives, ensuring preparations can be made for maintenance and repair work before the locomotive arrives at the site.
The tracks inside the depot and most of the sidings outside are electrified and the voltage can be switched between 1.5kV dc, 3kV dc, 15kV 16.7Hz ac, and 25kV 50Hz ac.
LWR is open to any customer for locomotive maintenance, and while primarily designed for electric traction the facility can also carry out selected procedures, such as tyre turning, on diesel locomotives.
The depot building is designed to enable future expansion and land has been reserved for this purpose.
