POLISH manufacturer Newag signed a contract on February 29 with Silesian Railways for the supply of 26 Impuls 2 EMUs.

The Zlotys 1.3bn (€301m) contract includes an option for four more trains, which will be used on regional services in the Silesian Voivodeship. The new 4-car EMUs, which will have a maximum speed of 160km/h will be fully accessible and fitted with bike racks.

"Delivery of the first EMU, together with the maintenance package, should take place no later than June 30, 2026, " says Mr Patryk Świrski, board president of Silesian Railway. "The remaining 25 EMUs will be delivered at the rate of two units per month. It is important for us that the contract provides a full maintenance contract for these trains."

The order follows the award to Newag of a Zlotys 2.3bn contract by PKP Intercity for the supply 63 multi-system locomotives in January, and the signing of a Zlotys 1bn contract with the same operator for 46 electric locomotives in December.

Also in December, Newag strongly denied claims that it deliberately programmed trains supplied to regional Polish operators to fail so it could benefit from additional maintenance business, announcing that it would pursue legal action against those making the allegations.
