AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has awarded Stadler a framework agreement worth up to €1.3bn to supply up to 120 Flirt Akku battery-powered trains, including a firm order for 16 trains.

The signing of the 10-year framework agreement is expected to take place in the autumn.

The new trains are intended for use on partially-electrified lines in the eastern region of Austria, where they will replace the current diesel fleet. The first 16 vehicles are expected to be used on the Kamptal railway between Hadersdorf am Kamp and Sigmundsherberg from 2028.

The battery-powered vehicles will be able to operate both with and without overhead catenary, with a battery range of 100km, and will be able to be recharged during operation or when braking.
